The Finer Things

After the unexpected success and positive feedback from our first release, “Brooklyn’s Finest” (released 6/1/10), we’re back with our sophomore effort, “THE FINER THINGS” (volumes 1 & 2). Sonically we’re taking you on a completely different journey, however, the distinctive vibe of The Stuyvesants is still very present in the music! We truly appreciate all of the support for our movement thus far, and hope that you will enjoy this soundscape. Download and/or listen to the two albums below.

Stoops Parks & Rooftops

Today is the first day of summer and to get things started off right (despite the clouds hanging over BK right now), we put together a Single that captures the feeling of summer in Brooklyn with some help from Naturel — the third member of The Stuyvesants. BK Summers are always incredible from the BBQs, the cookouts, & the fish fries to the rooftop parties & random beach excursions. So take a listen, vibe out, and enjoy the summer…

Father/Son Homemade Spacecraft

This is just so ridiculously cool. I doubt anyone would attempt to do this with a blackberry. iPhone FTW.

NYMag says:

In a burst of science-is-fun educational invention, a Brooklyn dad built a carrier for an iPhone (the current model) and an HD video camera, out of a takeout box, tied it to a weather balloon, and let it go with the camera running. It reached a height of nineteen miles, or about 100,000 feet, which is high enough to show the earth’s curvature and a black sky above the atmosphere. At that height, the low pressure means that the helium expanded and the balloons burst, whereupon the little cushioned capsule came down, down, down — and landed 30 miles outside New York, signaling to its owners via the iPhone’s GPS, whereupon they went and picked it up. The resulting six minutes of rivetingly weird film are sure to make Mythbusters fans weep with joy.

Brooklyn Tornado

So me and @calinative we’re sitting in a meeting yesterday when all of a sudden the sky went pitch black and the light rain that was coming down turned into heavy rain going up, down, left and right. Neither of us had any idea of a pending storm, but after checking Twitter we realized we were witnessing a Tornado. Anyways, on my bike ride back home from the meeting, I snapped a few pics of the damage.

“The Stuy”

The Stuy Tee Shirt

So this weekend I made a last-minute decision to check out Spike Lee’s huge “Brooklyn Loves Michael Jackson” event. Coming up on wash week, I figured it would be a good time to rock my new Stuyvesants tee. As soon as I got to the park I started catching random stares from people. At first, I attributed it to the usual doppelgänger, ‘you look familiar comments’ I’ve been getting from people since high school (#SMH). But then some dude came up to me asked about my shirt. A few minutes later another dude came up to me & asked to take a picture of me; er um — the shirt. Then a few ladies came up and inquired about it as well. This pretty much continued throughout the entire day. Needless to say, it seemed folks were really eying my shirt. Totally unexpected — but the best part about it was having a chance to put a few new people on to The Stuyvesants record. Hopefully, they’ll actually end up checking it out.

The project has been growing in a really organic way since we released it. People have been finding out about through all different types of outlets from twitter, to radio shows to plain ole word-of-mouth. 3 months later there still seems to be a good amount of people just now discovering it and showing love. That’s something neither me nor Darien ever expected. If you’ve mentioned the record to anybody at all — Thank You.

Anyways, I say all that to say that we’ve finally got a store; albeit a small store, set up for the Stuyvesants’ tees. Check it out here and maybe pick up the new shirt while you’re at it. If you catch a couple of stares from people you don’t know, make sure you put them on!

Absolut Brooklyn

Absolut Brooklyn

I should probably own a few of these.

If Sean Combs-endorsed Ciroc is the vodka of choice in his home borough of Manhattan, then we suppose Brooklyn just adopted Spike Lee and Absolut to represent its buzz. Yep, you can now buy ABSOLUT BROOKLYN for just $24.99 at your local liquor store (the company will be giving $50,000 in sales to Habitat for Humanity for their effort to build affordable and environmentally sustainable housing in Bed-Stuy).

But what does Brooklyn taste like? We’re told “the new flavor is a blend of red apple and ginger and comes in a specially-designed bottle reminiscent of the ubiquitous Brooklyn Stoop Life.”
