LOVING WordPress 2.7 (but it isn’t perfect)

Wordpress 2.7

GOOD.

So far, just about everything about it is amazing! I really love the drag and drop features on the dashboard and post pages. You can really consolidate your interface down to the essentials. Quick press is an AMAZING feature. In fact I used it to start this post! I love how you can include your own RSS feeds  in the dashboard as well. Dashboard comment replies are a great addition as well.  The new icon designs really seem to gel with the Typography of the admin. I was glad to see that they now have Thumbnail, Medium, and Large settings for image sizes under the Settings > Media panel. Overall the new UI is incrediblly fast, and intuitive. Great job WP TEAM!

BAD.

I really wish the WP Team would have brought drag and drop to the widget management panel. Especially since it had been using drag and drop in versions 2.0-2.3. I don’t understand why they got rid of it in 2.5 only to replace it with such a tedious management system that is still here in 2.7. Widget management is becoming more and more popular these days.

I am still getting used to the side navigation. While it opens up the entire interface ALOT, I do find myself scrolling to get to some of the key navigation links mainly found under the settings panel(if you have a ton of plugins installed this could definitely become a hassle after a while). Also, the extra click required to access the sub navigation is a minor annoyance as well. I ultimately feel like automatic sub-nav reveals are much more user friendly. For example Ozh’s Admin Drop down menu for WP 2.3-2.6 or even how Apple’s sidebar modules automatically reveal themselves on mouse rollovers.

Another annoyance I’ve noticed is the Flash uploader which hasn’t worked since Adobe updated the Flash player to version 10. not sure who is to blame here. I just hope its fixed soon.

Last thing I noticed is that Quick Press doesn’t attach images to the post the way regular posts attach the images. Could cause problems with meta data and post specific image displaying like what I use in the Neutica Theme.

Now that 2.7 is out, it should take me about a week to make sure Mixtape & Neutica are working correctly. Expect some updates in the next 7-10 days!

Though I haven’t pointed out a lot of flaws with WP 2.7, I do actually LOVE it. It’s just always easier to point out the bad with things ike this.

    Thanks for sharing this, Allan.

I just upgraded to WP 2.7 and I’ve found a few bugs in plugins (Flickr and ACE) and sidebar (my histats don’t wanna show up). Fixing… The new dashboard is a little bit annoying but I hope to learn it fast.

Good luck with your amazing themes!
For the moment, I’ve have no problem with your Mixtape theme. ;)

Yeah, there’s a bit of a learning curve for the new Dashboard layout. Some things moved around. I’m still a fan of OZH’s Dropdown plugin. It makes any page in WordPress one click away. The side nav is too ‘clicky’ for me — especially when editting the settings tab.

Yup, Mixtape seems to working perfectly. I’m working on the update now and i’m just about finished with it!

Hi Allan – thanks for all your work with Mixtape. We are a small, independent recording studio in Grass Valley, CA trying to get Mixtape going for our artist spotlight page.

I am a relative newbie to WordPress (you can see my site at catherinesmusic.com) and I am excited to get this functioning, but I am having some problems. Would you be willing to help us out?

    Peace,
