AutoFocus: A Free Photographers WordPress Theme

AutoFocus WordPress Theme

After a few small GPL issues and some bug fixes, AutoFocus is here! It’s a derivative of Futurosity Aperio Prototype by Robert Ellis. It is designed specifically for photographers looking for a simple and elegant way to display their work online but can also be used as a regular blog. Here’s a short feature list:

  • Images are automatically placed into posts which means you can forget about Custom Fields!
  • Psuedo-Image protection. All of the images are protected from download with an invisible layer of HTML that prevents users from Right Clicking and Saving the image directly. Similar to how flickr does it.
  • 2 Front page layouts. Photo Layout (home.php) and Blog Layout (index.php)

View the Demo, Download, or visit the Theme Page for more info.

Enjoy!

do you have to manually put in the date? or is it the date of upload?

I need a photo site and I think I’ll use this.

    • Posted Mar 27, 2009 at 12:14 pm | Permalink

Everything is pretty much automatic, including the dates. All you have to do write posts normally and it pulls the date that you publish the post. Though it would be cool if I could pull the photo date from the Jpeg EXIF data…HMMMMM…

    Brilliant. I love the idea.

Hi, I like your theme and installed it on my website, and everything looked great. But it seems like on internet explorer it doesn’t appear the same way as it does on firefox or safari..i tried few different computers with IE and still the same. Is this the theme problem or on my side?

    • Posted Mar 31, 2009 at 10:01 pm | Permalink

      Rn,
As it states on the theme page, I haven’t completely browser proofed this theme. It isn’t a problem on your side, it’s just a problem with IE — especially IE6. It should look fairly decent in IE7 or IE8, but IE6 pretty much destroys the theme layout. It’s on the to-do list to fix these issues, but it isn’t very high on my list. Sorry.

    Hi Allan,
I’d like to add some widgets to the Autofocus theme, but it seems they can’t appear after I activate them…Is there any specific procedures to activate them?
    Thanx:-)

    • Posted Apr 1, 2009 at 12:25 pm | Permalink

      Hi SIlvia,
The widgets work fine. You need to create an ‘Archives’ page like the instructions describe on the AutoFocus theme page to show your widgets. Best of luck!

    Hi Allan,

just a brief question: I use a plugin that makes slideshow and I can see it now in the sidebar, but I was wondering if I can make the page of the slideshow as the homepage?…
    Thank you:-)

    Hey Allan,

I found ur theme today and think it has so much potential!

I was wondering, is it possible to choose WHICH photo would be featured in the front page as well as how it is to be cropped?

    Thanks a bunch

  9. Posted Apr 9, 2009 at 9:22 pm | Permalink

Oh, I forgot to mention…perhaps the problem is that I use FLICKR Manager to upload all my photos?

    • Posted Apr 9, 2009 at 9:29 pm | Permalink

      Thanks Ben,
AutoFocus pulls the latest uploaded or linked image so keep that in mind when adding images. Unfortunately you cannot edit the cropping.

Not sure if i am being dumb, or I have a problem with my setup.

    1) When you say simply attach an image, does this differ from using the Flash image uploader

    2) Uploading images to the Media Library doesn’t seem to work for some reason on my installation, yet I have the right permissions, I think. So can’t work out if this is cos I don’t need to upload the images that way, or if there is a server issue?!?

    TIA – nice template!

    • Posted Apr 10, 2009 at 1:38 pm | Permalink

      Hi Richard,
      1) Nope. This is the Uploader I am referring to: example
      2) If you are uploading images directly to the Media Library, unattached, you need to attach them to a post so that AutoFocus can grab the images.

      • Posted Apr 10, 2009 at 6:18 pm | Permalink

OK so I seem to not be able to upload – it stalls on “Crunching”. Works on a local installation, just not my server.

        Will have to dig further!

Yup, it sounds like your server dude. Check with you host’s support team.

do you think you could help me out a little? it was showing up fine in the template i was using before (just added it into the cms using the wordpress interface). but once i activated AutoFocus, it disappeared!

Thanks heaps, this is all so new to me.

Love the theme. I am doing an iPhone photo of the day. When I go to the post there is a large image at the top of the post, the text and then a small image at the bottom of the post. How can I remove the small image at the bottom leaving just one image on the post/page. Thanks. PS i’ve gotten great feedback from other photogs on your theme and I letting them know where to find ‘Autofocus’

    • Posted Apr 13, 2009 at 2:20 pm | Permalink

      Thanks Phillip!
All you need to do is remove the smaller image from the post content. When posting from an iPhone, you need to make sure you Save the post as a NON-local draft so that the image is uploaded to the server. After you do that you just need to delete the image and link HTML from the post content in your phone. Then you can start writing like normal. Hope that helps.

    Hi Allan,
I was just wondering how to remove all date/author/comments and browse options to make the page look more like a portfolio and less like a blog.

Theme is wonderful by the way.

  16. Posted Apr 16, 2009 at 3:20 pm | Permalink

Terrific theme. I’ve downloaded an date exclusion plugin however, it only works to rid the date from the post, not the home page. The white numbers still appear. Can you help?

    • Posted Apr 16, 2009 at 6:08 pm | Permalink

      Thanks Tyler,
I don’t know how that plugin works but you can simply hide the dates with CSS with something like
      .big-date{display:none}

Hi Allan, thank you for the hint of Static Page.
I’d have another question on Autofocus: when I write an article, that in my case is just a list of pictures mostly, can I arrangfe the pictures for examole in 2 rows?

Just to give you an idea…
    Thank you!

Hi Silvia, you can select a smaller image size like medium and use “alignleft” and “alignright” to postion the images. YOu can also use this technique.

    Hello,

I’ve downloaded autofocus theme for my new site. I LOVE the design and it was working fine for me until today. Something has happened to make the text all go to the extreme left of the page on the “about” page etc. I think it occurred when I was experimenting with the reading look options (ie making the about appear as the front page). Do you have any idea how I can get it back looking to normal? thanks :)

      Hi Jennifer,
Remove all of the unnecessary, styling that you have in the HTML of your content.

    Hi Allan,

I’m having a problem with the theme, when I try to ‘update a post’ or ‘publish a post’ by clicking on the respective button, it gives me this error:

Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output started at /home/onlinebu/public_html/jessicasue/wp-includes/post-template.php:54) in /home/onlinebu/public_html/jessicasue/wp-includes/pluggable.php on line 850

    Any idea why?

    Thx!

I’ve never seen that error before. Make sure you are using the latest version of WordPress and then check in the Support Forums.

    Hi Allan,

After I added the Statcounter plugin to my site (http://www.ngophuonglan.com/), whenever I hover my mouse over the left and right side of my site, it appears that all that area links to statcounter.com. When I don’t use that plugin, it doesn’t link to statcounter on both side. Do you know why and how to fix it?

    Thanks.

    • Posted May 6, 2009 at 7:40 am | Permalink

      Hi Ngo,
I’m not sure. I’ve never used that plugin. Maybe try adding the Statcounter to a different part of the template.

Hey there Allan. First off absolutely beautiful theme great job. I had it working perfectly and then I accidentally deleted wordpress from my server. I reinstalled it and everything looks great except for one thing…

The home page doesn’t have that fancy layout that autofocus is famous for. It just displays my blog entry and not even the way I want it to. You have to click the blog heading to get the large image with the gallery below it. Does autofocus not have gallery support?

Maybe you could take a look and tell me what you think?

    Thanks so much!

    • Posted May 19, 2009 at 1:50 am | Permalink

Looks like your’re missing the home.php file. Re-download AutoFocus, and add the home.php back into the /themes/autofocus/ folder. Should do the trick.

  24. Posted May 19, 2009 at 2:21 am | Permalink

thanks so much that worked perfectly. I have one more question and I’m not sure if you can answer it. When I click a picture in the gallery the previous and next image thumbnails are far below the main image. Is there any way to bring them up so the viewer doesn’t have to scroll down to go to the next image?

    • Posted May 19, 2009 at 10:44 am | Permalink

      Tristan,
Sure, you can customize the theme to do anything you want but that’s what the << and >> are intended to be used for.
