AutoFocus Update: Version 0.9.5

AutoFocus 0.9.5

Fixes:

  • Removes the first image from the post content when it comes before the_content text. This effectively fixes the ‘duplicate image’ that many people have found to be a problem in the comments. With 0.9.5 You DO NOT need to delete the first/duplicate image from the post content.
  • It also allows the images to show up in the RSS feed.
  • Adds indented sub-page formatting in the main menu.
  • Removes Gray background for smaller images on single and attachment pages.

Download it here.

I believe this will be the last update for a while as it solves almost all of the concerns that have been reported in the comments. I’ve got to thank Rob for helping with the duplicate image/RSS feed image fixes. Great work.

    Allen, THANKS!
I’ve have the new version in place and am making the various cosmetic changes from my personal mods to the previous version – a good reason to back-up all of ones files which, happily, I did. :)

Thanks again for all your work.

All in and everything works beautifully.

P.S. Allan, sorry for daftly spelling your name wrong above.

    Allan,
    a little get-around for a new ‘problem’ in 0.9.5.

    1) What’s the ‘problem’? Well the nifty fix you’ve made (and for which I am so happy) to ensure first images in the content of a post appear only above the post title and are not duplicated below it is that this also happens on Pages, such as the about page.

In my case my image on my About page which used to appear inline with the copy is now gone.

    2) Solved. Simply insert the same image, duplicate it, right next to the first image and, tada!, the first image still disappears but the second image is now seen where one expected to see the first image.

*Shakes Fist* That’s definitely a slip up on my part.

0.9.6 is going to fix that. Should be out this week.

      Thanks for the heads up!

        Allan,
really, 0.9.6? What happened to “I believe this will be the last update for a while …” ? ;)

      Hi Allan

I was wondering if it’s possible to go back to the 0.9.4 version of the theme with a push of a button. I forgot to make a backup and now all the old layout is gone. Took me ages to fix it as I wanted it to be the last time. Do you have a clue? I am using WordPress.

      Thanks for a great theme!

        Hi David,
If you replaces all of the files, directly on your server, you will need to check with your hosting company to see if they keep backups of your files.

I love this design! I have a question tho, how do I manually select the image that will be used as the post preview and at the top of the post? It seems sometimes the first image uploaded is the “preview” image and sometimes the last image uploaded is the “preview” image.

    • Posted Apr 30, 2009 at 7:25 pm | Permalink

      Hi Tamee,
As it states in the instructions, AutoFocus, pulls the LAST(or latest) image uploaded when you use the ‘Add Media > From Computer’ option.

        Hi Allan,
Please forgive my ignorance, I am new to wordpress. Where could I find these ‘instructions’? And how would I go about getting rid of the preview image being displayed at the top of a post?

        Thanks

    Amazing design, very original.
I think there’s something wrong with the cropping I believe.
If the picture was a 800×800 and the display box was 200×100, the display box shouldn’t display the middle 200×100 pixels of the picture, it should probably resize the picture to 200×200 and then crop top and bottom to have 200×100 so that the visitor gets a full idea of the picture instead of tunnelling the view into one area of the picture which may potentially contain nothing

    • Posted May 1, 2009 at 5:20 pm | Permalink

      Hi Xiao,
Because the cropping dimensions are different for post, it’s impossible to specify a particular part of the image for cropping.

      • Posted May 3, 2009 at 12:16 am | Permalink

Hi, I understand that there is definitely no way to guess a way to crop the picture but as a general procedure, would you not agree that it’s perhaps better to first resize the big picture such that one of the dimensions fully fit the image box and then crop the other dimension? (like fill screen for wallpapers)

Outside of the technical issues of pulling off that extra image resize, my vision for AutoFocus was to have the images automatically zoomed in to a more or less random location. I think it creates a bit of mystery or curiosity that’s inviting to most users. That’s just my opinion though.

Allen, thanks for your great template.

However, how about the safari layout has a little bit problem.

I have tried to fix it myself, but the position also has some problem.

    Hi Allan

Fantastic template. I am a sculptor nd have gone through several generations of standard sites to display my work and as you may guess a photo is the only real way to display it online.

I was wondering if it is possible to limit the number of posts being displayed on the index or home page (i.e. displaying less images) whilst still being able to display a larger number of posts when searching categories in the Archives.

I kow how to limit the number of posts didplayed – it just effects the whole arther than the front page only.

great work though – many thanks

There are ways to do it but it involves some theme customization. Check in the WP Forums.

      • Posted May 6, 2009 at 3:21 am | Permalink

I posted a query on the wp forums after searching and not finding the answer and was directed to a plugin called Compact Query String Reloaded, which was not in the wordpress archives but can be googled. It does the job perfectly. The other obvious advatnage is that it wont override the settings when theme updates are done.

You will need to edit the functions.php file to make that type of change.

    Hi.

Great theme! I am an artist, and I needed a visual way of displaying my artwork. Your theme works great.

I am however having problems with the site in Internet Explorer. I’m on a Mac, and everything works fine on my machine, but others have told me the site is not working properly. IE6 and IE7 (which are still very prevalent) are displaying the “Browse: Older and Newer” section to the right of the main image on my posts instead of below the post. There are also a number of other little glitches, like IE script errors, the hover text doesn’t always work, and the top image is not showing in IE6. I despise IE, but I do have to make sure my site is working in those browsers. Any ideas?

      Hi Andy,
Unfortunately, as I mention on the theme page, I have not completely browser proofed AutoFocus for IE. You are welcome, to add some conditional CSS for IE to the theme, but at the moment, I can’t help with that type of customization. Sorry.

    Hey Allan,

just integrated your theme into our website, it’s great man! I’ve never done a website before, and don’t have much experience with html. There were a few things we wanted to do differently with it, but didn’t know how.
First, we wanted to take the dates off the homepage picture posts and have them set up to link to our pages at the top. We were also wondering how we could list the page links horizontally under our title, as well as have a coloured band behind the title. Anyhow, if you could give us a direction to head, that would be great.
thanks again for making such a great theme!
    Cheers

Hi. I’m creating a new WordPress site using the AutoFocus Theme. I’d like
reverse the order of images displayed on the home page. I’d like it to start
with today’s post as the largest image and then proceed with upcoming days. (I’ve installed the “no-future-post” so that post-dated posts will appear.) I’m trying to use the home page as an upcoming events calendar with photos of bands and upcoming concerts… I’d be very grateful if you could explain to me how to reverse the order of the images displayed. Thanks!

I’m in testing mode hoping to go live this week. BUT, all of my posts have double images — the same image twice. I like the them but this is annoying. Can you advise a fix?

    • Posted May 17, 2009 at 9:11 pm | Permalink

      Hi Cliff,
      Please visit the FAQ page.

      • Posted May 17, 2009 at 9:31 pm | Permalink

I get duplicate images whenever the image has a caption: if I delete the caption [and associated markup], the post no longer has duplicate images. If I delete the caption and leave the caption markup then I get a duplicate image.

For some reason the duplicate image has a proper ‘alt’ tag, the main image has an empty alt tag.

[This is in blog posts with only a single picture, no other added text or images.]

        • Posted May 18, 2009 at 9:34 am | Permalink

          Hi Dave,
Interesting, I will look into it. I think the new WP captioning feature wraps the image in a new HTML tag which AutoFocus doesn’t look to remove. If you only have one image per post, you probably shouldn’t even bother with adding the captions. Just use the regular text You should also check out the FAQ to get a better understanding of how things work.

I will work on the ALT tags in the main image. That sounds like a bug.

I’ve returned to the version 0.9.4 of the theme as the “fixes” in the latest version broke the compatibility with the Lighbox plugin. It was only showing the latest photo and no other photos. Version 0.9.4 it’s ok.

    Hi Allan,

I am newer to photoblogging than I am to WordPress and so I have set up a site to simply test various themes with photos, etc. I have only added to test posts, one of which contains an image much larger than 800×600 which does not seem to be scaling correctly within the index template, nor the post pages in IE7, Firefox nor Chrome.

    Perhaps I’m doing something wrong?

    • Posted Jun 1, 2009 at 11:18 am | Permalink

Interesting. I’m not sure what’s causing that. You should resize your image manually and then re-upload the image.

    • Posted Jun 11, 2009 at 3:05 pm | Permalink

      Hi Johnny,
No there isn’t. The best you can do is resize your image manually before uploading, but it shouldn’t be any smaller than 800px wide.

      Hi Tom,
I will look into this. Someone else reported a similar issue. In the meantime, try re-sizing the image before you upload it to WP.

      • Posted Jun 19, 2009 at 10:21 am | Permalink

Thanks Allan. For the moment I will do that, if you could look into it, that would be great as I use it simply to display images I upload from my iPhone. Kind of defeats the purpose if I send to my computer to resize first haha.

Appreciate the effort, love the theme. Cheers.

          Hey Tom,
Please re-read the instruction, especially the part about uploading from the iPhone. You have to turn image re-sizing OFF for it to work correctly.

When I put multiple images on a page (All 128X128) It forces them to align vertically along the left, instead of going horizontal. Any ideas on how I can fix this?
