Neutica

Check out the new & improved Neutica+!

Neutica is a lightweight, two (five?) column, widgetized, WordPress theme designed completely with CSS, sans image graphics. The design is based on the sometimes overly popular yet classic font: Helvetica Neue. Neutica is ideal for mini-magazine publishing or standard blog publishing. This was built with Sandbox — a valid XHTML / CSS selector rich WordPress environment. Neutica was developed for WordPress 2.5+, but it should also work in 2.3.+. It has been tested mostly in Safari and Firefox but it should also maintain its look in IE 6 and IE 7 outside of a few font discrepancies.

Download

PLEASE READ THIS before you download Neutica: This theme does not cost you a dime. All I ask is that you please keep a link back to allancole.com/wordpress as it requires in the license below. Also, if you have questions about WordPress please visit the WordPress Documentation or Support Forums. If you find bugs, I will try my best to help you with them. Just leave a comment below or email me. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to help you customize this theme but I am open to suggestions for features that you may want to see in future updates.

Download Neutica Theme 1.0.9

Updated to version 1.0.9 which fixes the colors.php CSS issue.

I will be updating this theme from time to time so subscribe to the feed to stay up to date.

Features

  1. The Neutica theme admin has options to alter the default colors of this theme.
  2. This theme was built entirely with CSS which mean there are no heavy theme images to slow down your site.
  3. For users who have the full version of the font: Helvetica Neue installed and activated on their machines, the headers and sub headers will display in HEAVY, BLACK and LIGHT weights, giving the theme an even cleaner look.
  4. I have tweaked the original Sandbox theme to suit the needs of this design, however much of the power of sandbox is left in tact. Follow this link to find out more.

Installation

To install, open the Neutica Theme folder and upload the contents of the plugins folder to your wordpress/wp-content/plugins directory. Upload the neutica folder to your wordpress/wp-content/themes folder. Then open your WordPress Admin, activate the plugins under the Plugins tab, and select the Neutica theme under the Design tab (or Presentation tab in versions prior to WordPress 2.5).

Modifications

There is only a few minor and optional changes that you can make to this theme.

  1. Featured Posts – This theme requires a category called Feature to operate correctly. The theme will then pull the latest post in that category and load it into the Feature section of the homepage.
  2. Post Images – Almost all of the images in this theme are loaded automaticaly. There are no Custom Field Keys/Values to worry about. Neutica will automatically grab the latest uploaded image attachment and use its thumbnail for the archive and home pages. Same goes for the Feature posts except it grabs the full resolution image for the background. Just make sure that you go to SETTINGS > MISCELLANEOUS and set the thumbnail size to 185px x 185px. That’s it.
  3. Tabbed Sidebar – The content in the Tabbed sidebar can be changed to whatever you like. In later versions, i will try to widgetize the tabs themselves, but for now it has to be done manually by editting the sidebar.php. The Tabbed content has its own widget section called “Tabbed Sidebar”. To get rid of the Tabbed Sidebar, just add a widget to it and it will replace the tabs.

Plugins

Neutica uses 1 simple plugin, which is included in the download. It is highly recommended, but not necessarily required.

  1. WP-Typogrify (included) — Helps to make web type conform to printed type standards.

Future Versions

The one update I plan on doing will implement a better way to manage the Tabbed Area so that you don’t have to dig into the code. As usual I am always open to suggestions or help with improvements. Let me know your thoughts in the comments section.

Neutica is Copyright © 2008 by Allan Cole. It is released under the GNU General Public License, version 3, as published by the Free Software Foundation. This theme is offered ‘as is’ so I don’t support theme customization but I will gladly help you with any bugs that you may find. Just leave a comment about it below.

    Hi Allan,

I just set up my site and it looks great. However, now when I go to insert a new post and click on one of the media upload links a window pops up that says “Are you sure you want to do this? Please try again.” I click on Please Try Again, but it just takes me back to the post. It doesn’t seem to want to automatically insert media anymore. What up?

I upload the new WordPress Version 2.9.1 but that doesn’t seem to help.

    Hi Allan,

Congratulations on the work you’re doing here. I really like this theme but it seems I can’t use it with Buddypress. If yes, is there anything special to do for that? Thank you.

    Kind regards,

    SPFK

hey, I’m trying to download this template for using it onto my blog and the links redirect me to your WordCamp presentation. Is this template still available? Or we gotta buy the plus version?

Sorry, I’m using a really crappy plugin to track downloads that resets its own settings every time I upgrade. Should be fixed now.

Autofocus is really a great theme. How can I hide the big date rendered on all the fotos in the overview at the home page?

    Hi! I am using NeuticaPlus…

I wanted to know how to get the random sticky image to work (I checked the box, but nothing happens). I am assuming that is the image that goes under the header above the posts. How can I get it to work??

    Thansk!

    • Posted Apr 30, 2010 at 1:31 pm | Permalink

Simply make a few of your posts ‘Sticky.’ There’s a setting to do so above the PUBLISH link in the admin.

I recently purchased Neutica+ after going over the demo. I’m running my websites through Bluehost and as far as I know, their wares are uptodate.

Neutica+ looks great and is well worth paying $15 for, purely as a contribution toward your efforts.

I’ve been trying (repeatedly) to install it, and this is what I get:

    ***begin***

    Unpacking the package.

    Installing the theme.

    Theme Installed successfully.

Warning: fopen(/home/**********************/wp-content/themes/neuticaplus/style.css) [function.fopen]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/**********************/wp-includes/functions.php on line 3598

Warning: fread(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource in /home/**********************/wp-includes/functions.php on line 3601

Warning: fclose(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource in /home/**********************/wp-includes/functions.php on line 3604

    ***end***

After I activate it, I get a message that reads:
    ***begin***
The active theme is broken. Reverting to the default theme.
    ***end***
It still appears in my list of available Themes, and when I activate it for the second time, it does become my current theme, but will read that its missing “style.css”

What’s the solution? I’m low in the programming skill level.

    Thanks.

Sounds like you skipped the installation instruction on the documentation page. It’s a child theme so it doesn’t work the same way normal themes do.

    Hi Allan,

Thank you very much for this great theme! I was wondering if there was any way to include live links on the post excerpts in the main page? If not, is this available in Neutica+?

    Thanks again!

    Luis

No neither version do that out of the box, but you could probably filter the default WordPress excerpts, to include links. Try a Google search for more info.

A good quality write-up having fantastic data. Loved it.

    Hey Alan,

Excellent theme. I have done a few mods here and there and really love the theme, as it was fairly easy to modify. I get the concept of php but I have never coded anything.

I am having problems with displaying Links in an effective way. Currently I have a giant html file that is loaded into a blank template. Can you tell me if it is possible to display my links (from links manager) in a similar way as here. ie: 3 columns and showing all of the data that I input in wordpress’ link tab backend.

If this is not possible, then is it possible to display the links similarly to your links page template, but including all of those other ‘hidden’ attributes (showing the actual URL, the description and possibly 2 categories?)

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks for the good work.

Hi, I was wondering where I could change the thumbnail width, it was not in the Miscellaneous part of the settings. Apparently in the latest WP release it’s under Settings then Media :] BTW, the colour customising thing isn’t working for me :( I’m stuck with the yellow. I’ll try to fix it though. Great great great theme!

    Hi,

Im wondering if I can change the font in this theme? From Helvetica Neue to Futura Condensed. If I can change it where do I change it?

  15. Posted Apr 19, 2010 at 11:19 pm | Permalink

    Hi Allan,

Thanks so much for the theme :) I really like it.

Anyhow I’ve been using it for a few days and I realised the thumbnail on the site is missing. None appears, juz the text. Im not sure if it has something to do with the theme? I also did a new post today but still no thumbnail comes up.

Hopefully you’ll be able to help :) Thanks in advance

    Hi Allan,

This is a great template. I’m really digging it. Thank you so much for creating it. However, since I’m a bit of a novice at modifying these things, I’m wondering if you (or anyone else here) could offer some quick tips on how to do the following:

    1. How do I change those fonts that are in black to a dark dark gray? Where do I look? What do I adjust?

    2. How do I remove the RSS link from the main menu in the top right hand corner?

    3. How do I simply get rid of, not replace, the big empty colored box that sits on the bottom left once you start posting?

    Many thanks again.

I am having trouble with the Sidebar in the Neutica theme. It used to work perfectly fine but sudendly it has stopped working. I believe it has stopped working when I upgraded to wordpress version 2.9.2. Anybody else having this problem? I can still see the sidebar but not the contents of it. Any help would be much appreciated!! And thanks for the great Theme!

Hi Allan! I really like your theme and wanted to use it. But when I upload on wordpress it showed this as a broken theme with “Stylesheet is missing”!

Did you know? Or is it just me?
